Variable Speed, Bought for Two Seasons
A single-stage compressor is on or off; a variable-speed compressor runs at whatever fraction of capacity the hour demands. In this region that buys three things. It holds more capacity on the coldest nights, which is the headline. It runs long, gentle cycles that keep temperature steady through the whiplash of a Kansas winter, where a south wind can move the thermometer thirty degrees in a day.
